| October 1, 2003: Here it is - the moment we've all been waiting for. The race that will decide which team will go home with an OHSL B1 League Championship under its belt. Westhill did just that today, defeating both Homer and Chittenango at a tri-meet at our home course at Onondaga Hill Middle School. In today's race, the key to Westhill's victory was its strong team depth - we placed 7 guys in front of Homer's 5th and Chittenango's 4th. Individually, the race was won by Chittenango star Ozzie Myers, followed by his team-mate Ben Jackson, who outkicked Kevin Blaich and Tim Hartnett at the finish. Next came Homer's top runner, Pat Hughes, followed by Matt Zych. Next, a very game Greg Pallotta edged two Homer runners at the finish to come in 7th overall. Mark Leonard and Taylor Mulherin (our 6th and 7th guys) finished 13th and 14th respectively (and since they were ahead of the other team's 5th runner, they increased their scores and helped us win!) Taylor had a real awesome race (moving up several spots from his finish at Tully) and took the Athlete of the Meet award. As a team, we guaranteed at least partial ownership of the OHSL B1 crown. We have a meet next week against Cortland...if we win, we keep the award ourselves, and if we lose, we share the season with Homer (5-1). |
